The people of Timo grapple with major agricultural issues.

Hillsides like this one lose potential agricultural use as more and more soil erodes off of them.

They generally raise livestock and crops with some success, but Haiti’s dry season, which lasts from October to February, creates a season of scarcity. To solve this, HHI is experimenting with different food crops that grow well in dry weather and is helping the local population install and manage small garden irrigation systems.

Another problem the people of Timo face is deforestation. Above 80% of the native forest has been removed for wood and charcoal production, leaving the hillsides vulnerable to soil loss through erosion. HHI plans to combat this by replanting trees, implementing adapted forage crops, and teaching proper grazing management.

While in Timo, our team conducts seminars to teach local farmers these and other important agricultural practices. Though on previous trips our team achieved much, there is still work to be done to improve agricultural conditions.

HHI does not give free handouts; instead, we focus on teaching principles and showing examples so that one day, the local people will no longer need our help. Make a major difference in the lives of others and donate to our agricultural projects now.
